The lodge and its four outer buildings were set back from the water and surrounded by a forest of birch trees and brush. Time, and the predominant direction of the wind from the lake, had cut a path through the trees that allowed a current of air to flow toward the lodge. Kerry remembered the first time she stayed at Fox Lodge and the weekend she met Simon.
Among his other jobs as a hunting and fishing guide, Simon was a regular fixture at Fox Lodge. The owners took Simon on when he had finished high school and quickly realized that he was not only capable of taking care of the complete maintenance of the lodge, but he was also able to handle the responsibilities of the (sometimes difficult) guests.
The lodge was initially built to be used as a private hunting cabin, but the last owners had converted it into a commercial lodge to accommodate vacationers from around the country and the U.S. It was a few years later that additional sleeping cabins were added and they still dotted the property around the main lodge. Since then there has not been a summer that the reservations werenât solidly booked, however, the winter bookings had thinned out considerably.
The spring brought a familiar scent of mud and pine as the ground began to thaw on the island. The area around Deception Bay was popular among avid fishers because of the deep water and the consistent currents. There were few cottages this far out which also gave the guests at Fox Lodge the privacy and relaxation that they came to Lake Pines in search of.
The shoal-covered shoreline stretched from the waterline and folded under the grassy knoll where the canopy of birch began to thicken. The water lapped onto the rocks echoing their sound in the curved secluded bay where the private dock stretched into the bay. A mixture of moss and small wildflowers dotted the crevices of the rock and Kerry could see small buds revealing new growth.
The irony was not lost on her that she was investigating the murder of a young woman just as life was starting to bloom on the island.
She walked directly to the main lodge and quickly realized the key she held in her hand would be useless at getting into the cabin since the doors and windows were shuttered with large panels of wood that were custom-made to protect the cabin from the elements and animals. Except for walking around the exterior of the building, there was nothing she could see at the main lodge.
Kerry walked toward the four outer buildings. She wasnât surprised to also find the four cabins shuttered for the winter. Without a hammer or a crowbar, she was not going to gain access to the buildings. Kerry suddenly realized that like every resort, big or small, there was always a tool shed or maintenance area, and that is where she could find something to pry the doors open.
She found a small shed on the far side of the island which was hidden by a hedge of evergreen bushes.
